Shut Up and Play the Hits
On April 2nd, 2011, LCD SOUNDSYSTEM took the stage for its farewell performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Frontman James Murphy chose to dissolve the band, which was one of the most acclaimed and influential of its time, while it was still at the height of its fame. This decision culminated in the band’s largest concert ever. The event, which sold out immediately, was a nearly four-hour spectacle featuring guest appearances by Arcade Fire and Reggie Watts, leaving the audience of thousands both elated and heartbroken. “SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS” not only captures this unique event with breathtaking visuals but also offers an intimate look at Murphy during the 48 hours surrounding the concert. Interwoven throughout is a candid and direct conversation between Murphy and author Chuck Klosterman, where they explore themes of music, creativity, aging, and the choice to end on a high note.
