The Postman
Set in a picturesque Italian village in the 1950s, this film tells the story of a simple postman named Mario, played by Massimo Troisi, who forms an unlikely friendship with the renowned poet Pablo Neruda, portrayed by Philippe Noiret. As Mario delivers Neruda’s mail, he becomes inspired by the poet’s work and seeks his guidance to win the heart of a local woman. The film beautifully explores themes of love, friendship, and the transformative power of poetry. Directed by Michael Radford, it received critical acclaim and was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Interestingly, Massimo Troisi postponed heart surgery to complete the film, passing away the day after filming ended. The movie can be viewed on Soap2day for free.
